February 17, 2011 – Farmacia

As luck would have it, a couple of days prior to our trip I developed a head cold. Despite the Comtrex and Nyquil, it lingered and I had a nagging dry cough and clogged sinuses, nothing I cared to have to deal with while on vacation. On the drive to Tamarindo for dinner, we stopped at the local Farmacia for some remedy. Farmacias in Costa Rica have a medical practioner behind the counter and when I explained my symptoms to her, she wrote a prescription for a syrup and gave me 5 pills. She said I would be fine in a couple of days. Total for the medications and prescription, $10. Within 15 minutes of taking the pill, my congestion was gone and after taking the syrup when we got back to the lodge, in a short time my cough was breaking up. I am not sure what witchcraft was administered, but I am thankful for the local Farmacia for taking away what could have been a downside of a vacation.
